| Notas / Notes: | Although
a purpose built Me262 night fighter had been designed with a stretched
fuselage to accommodate the co-pilot, as a stop gap, a few two seater
trainers were modified for this role. The modification consisted of adding
a FuG218 'Neptune' array on the nose and under the tail as well as FuG350
'Naxos' installed to home in on the British bomber H2S signals. Five of
these aircraft were flown by 10/NJG11, bearing the numbers Red 8 through
to Red12. My finished model is fitted with a pair of long barrelled 20mm
MG151/20s. These were seen on a couple of the original aircraft, however
Red 12 was fitted with four 30mm MK108. I cannot remember why I didn't
modify the kit and fit the correct armament for this aircraft!
This Dragon kit takes the original Trimaster Me262 as a basis, but with the addition of a new sprues providing the fuselage and dual cockpit components. Dragon included an etched stainless steel fret, providing the wheel well details, seat harness assemblies etc., as well as the FuG218 'Neptune' aerials. The parts break down is completed with a set of rubber tyres, again taken from the original Trimaster release. The new rear cockpit parts are generally accurate, although the co-pilot console supports need to be fabricated using plasticard. The black-out curtains seen on the finished model were added using fine lead foil. The cockpit glazing parts were the only real area of complaint with this kit. The parts supplied with my model were of poor quality having ripple marks over most of the surface as if the moulding tool was showing signs of age. Remember I built this model as soon as it was released back in February 1994! Extensive polishing both inside and out almost solves the problem, but its two or three hours of work which should be unnecessary on what was then a new kit. |
